Joep Trappenburg

Industrial Designer

What I do

I help driven entrepreneurs to improve, innovate and make their products more sustainable.

About me

You will get to know me as a friendly, versatile and driven person. And as a committed industrial designer who likes to use his creative power to develop relevant quality products with a positive impact.

As a child, I already enjoyed being creative. During my Industrial Design studies at TU Delft, I enjoyed drawing lessons, model building and design projects. Before my graduation project, I spent a year in Barcelona, where I studied, learned Spanish and did an internship.

After graduating, I worked as a freelance designer for well-known Dutch design agencies such as Spark and Flex. I then joined Van der Veer Designers (now Modyn). There, I worked on the entire product family of Yepp bicycle seats and accessories, among other things. I felt like a fish in water during these projects: working intensively with colleagues to think up, design, develop, prototype, test, etc. all sub-aspects. Together, creating safe, user-friendly and attractive quality products. The Yepp seat product family has been successful on the international market for 15 years now and has been awarded many design prizes, including a Red Dot award.

I am an all-round industrial designer with extensive experience in designing bicycles, e-scooters, strollers, furniture, packaging and tools.
I have been an independent designer since 2013 and have been able to help various entrepreneurs with product design and development of relevant quality products.
From 2017 to 2021 I was a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Industrial Design at TU Delft. There I enjoyed guiding students and teams in learning to design products and systems responsibly.

My versatility - in skills and experience - enables me to collaborate with various disciplines and to design integrally. I am characterised by a pursuit of quality in all facets. I get energy from creating and collaborating, have a broad interest and like to continue to develop myself. In my spare time I like to do sports, do odd jobs and cook.

I see products as tools to make our lives easier, safer and more efficient. And more beautiful. It bothers me when a product or process is user-unfriendly, unsafe, inefficient, unhealthy or unattractive. That makes me think of improvements. I have a natural drive to want to improve things, processes and systems.

Concerned about climate change and environmental pollution, I want to commit myself as a person and engineer to a positive impact. I enjoy working on the responsible development of user-friendly, attractive products with a long lifespan, that are repairable and recyclable. Products for a circular economy in which we live comfortably within the carrying capacity of the earth.

How I help customers

For impact-driven entrepreneurs, I use my analytical, creative and communicative skills. Whereby I do not rest until the optimal solution for a design problem has been found. I approach complex challenges in a structured manner. Through close cooperation, I ensure that everyone's knowledge and expertise is integrated.
